I'm really excited about our (new to us) piano. Sadly, we had to move the pretty hutch to make room for it but I think it was worth it for sure. Ivan and I have both been playing everyday and it is just so nice to have a piano right there all the time.

I have pulled out a few of my books but I think most of my music must be still at my mom's house. I am very much a play from the book piano player. I wish I was better at improvising (Ivan is a pro) but I guess that is something I can work on!

Anyone out there play the piano? Are you a book reader or do you prefer to play by ear?

  1. oh i miss my piano that is awesome! i cant wait till i get a space to have one. (am top floor flat at the moment which isn't practical! )

I'm the same as you! classically trained so i'm good at reading music and pieces i've played abit before, bach and handel but I can't just jam!
I was hoping i'll pick it up after playing abit more. Please share if you learn anything along the way.
the piano is my FAVE instrument!

  2. It's a really nice piano, and I'm sure you will be enjoying it for years to come. I also need music sheets to play, and I have so much admiration (and a little envy) for people that are able to play by ear, and who can accompany and harmonize on the spot.
Nice wall colour too, and cute cameras and globe on top.

  4. Beautiful piano! I used to be able to read it by the book and did grades 1-3 when I was younger. But now, even though I play every day and I'm in a couple of church bands, I can't read music for the life of me! So, making it up as I go along is definitely my thing now. Just give me the chords and I'm set to go! haha!
P.S LOVE the colour of your wall!! :D

  7. I'm a book player as well. I think I'm just too insecure to trust my ear! I recognize those RCM books! My parents just moved my old piano to my place and I'm excited to get back to playing regularly again. Enjoy!

  8. Nice! I would love to have a piano again, but there's really no good place for it in my little house. I used to love to make up songs when I was a kid, but man did I hate recitals! Still have a goal to learn the Charlie Brown song someday...it's a tough one though! :)

  10. I only have a piano at my parent's place; I used to play as a kid. Now I only have a set of songs I can play by heart, other than that, I suck :p By book it takes me ages to practice and I only wish I could improvise better!

  12. Wow, those books take me back! I studied Royal Conservatory too, up until grade 9. Then I went off to University and quit. I haven't played since and can't wait for the day when I have a home for my piano. It's just a beautiful dust-collector at my parents' place until that happens. Good luck picking it up again!

  14. Nice! I'm a classically trained pianist and cellist, forever jealous of the jazz kids out there who can improvise! I find it pretty impossible to memorize pieces - even though I barely glance at the sheet music, I think I'm just paralyzed at the thought of forgetting and not knowing where to pick up. Since moving to the US I haven't had a piano and I can't wait to be settled and finally in a position to buy one secondhand. Have fun with it!

  15. Ooh, just slightly jealous right now! I've been talking about getting a piano for years, but the places we've lived have always been too small, even for an apartment sized piano. (less than 600 square feet - I suppose a dining room table is a higher priority...) Like Erin, I have a beautiful piano living at my parents' place, just waiting for me to bring it home, but there's just no space and that thing is heavy!

I studied Royal Conservatory up to grade 8, so I'm totally a by-the-book person. I can't even memorize! Didn't even bother trying for my exams.

  19. Hello!

During the weeks I stay at my aunts house, because it's near to my university. And she has a piano and my cousin plays it. I just understand the magic you try to explain when you say it's nice to have a piano near you. The house fills with the sound of music... and it's feels like magic.
