Even though we had a not so wonderful experience with the Field Museum while we were in Chicago I thought I would share some of the cute things I snapped photos of. I say we had a not so wonderful experience because we didn't realize it closed so early and the person selling tickets didn't mention that we would only have an hour and a half to explore the whole place which is absolutely impossible. Partly our fault, partly her fault but it resulted in us only seeing a teensy fraction of the huge museum. Anyways...here are some photos!
Some of the animals are making the funniest little faces. At the Field Museum lots of the animals are super old, like over 100 years old! Crazy.
I wish we had have been able to see more of the museum...maybe next time!

That third photo is hilarious, best animal face ever! It's a shame you didn't get to see more though, they should really warn you before you go in if you are buying a ticket that you won't have time to see everything. Something similar happened to me at a museum here but they were nice enough to let us in the next day as well free of charge as we had barely seen a quarter of what was on show. I wish I got to spend more time in the museums around me, but with 2 dogs it's difficult to find a full day to explore them xo
ReplyDeleteOK, first of all: taxidermy simultaneously amazes and spooks me. When I was growing up, one of our neighbors was a taxidermist and had a basement full of animals... creepy! Second... has it ever occurred to you that there are some really silly looking animals in the world?
ReplyDeleteYes! I agree with you about taxidermy. When my cats pass away I would love to have them taxidermied but I am afraid that people will think I'm nuts.
DeleteAwwww I love the panda!!
ReplyDeleteAll of those eyes are staring into the crevasses of my soul. Well...i'm sufficiently haunted!

Great post! I love taxidermy making silly faces <3
ReplyDeleteOnly an 1.5hr? That stinks! Typically if you go into a museum that close to closing they let you in for free the next day. At least that's what I've experienced!
ReplyDeleteAlso, taxidermy gives me the eebie jeebies. Haha I'm glad you enjoyed it though!

that last photo of the lions is slightly heartbreaking that the cubs died so young! but these pictures are all so beautiful! i hope i can go there some day!
ReplyDeleteI know! I am equal parts mesmerized and sad when I see taxidermy no matter how old the animal!
DeleteOh it's the worst when you got to a great place and there's not enough time to see everything. When we were in England we went to Kew Gardens and it was amazing, but we didn't even see half of it. We really want to go back to spend a whole day there, but there wasn't any time in the end.
ReplyDeleteHaha, some of those faces are priceless. I really should get around to taking photos of the inside of my nearest museum, it has loads of Victorian (and older) taxidermy. I keep thinking it's so funny how so much of what's in America isn't very old, my local museum opened up in 1846, and that's a younger one! :D England's so full of old things.

Oh man I LOVE the displays for the stuffed animals. Do those still count as dioramas?? The painted walls that look like they should end miles away, the little bits of shrubs, all the animals positioned as realistically as possible.. Totally love it. I would love to do that kind of work some day, though I'm sure there's not a big demand for it! Maybe after I retire :p

Great photos. Harvard's Museum of Natural History has a great showcase of animals, as well. I always love going there.
