I finally tried my hand at crewel embroidery and I love it.
This little piece took a pretty long time. I'm not sure if that's because I am a slow embroider-er or if I completed it in a reasonable time frame. I absolutely love it though and was so happy to give it as a birthday gift to my best friend!
I followed the design from a piece of vintage crewel that I found online and just drew up my own version of it. And by "my own version" I mean I copied it almost completely. It was just so perfect!
Next on my list is to finish the one I started for myself. It is pinks and oranges and will go in our bedroom when it is complete. I also eventually want to try the alphabet sampler that Meredith blogged about. It is so pretty and will teach me some new stitches.
Does anyone out there do crewel embroidery? Probably!

Ah, we have a crewel embroidered piece in our kitchen, that my mother-in-law made. I love crewel! Also, Meredith is a total doll. I love her stuff!
ReplyDeleteI am an embroiderer, although I do a different kind of embroidery to crewel. This is gorgeous, such pretty colours and super neat, great work lovely lady xx
ReplyDeleteOh, it's so beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteIt turned out so beautifully Elycia! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI popped over to check out Meridith's ABC sampler and I can't believe how lovely that one is too!
That is beautiful! Is that the "crewel" wool thread? Not sure of the correct term. Or is it regular DMC type embroidery floss.
ReplyDeleteI have been dying to try crewel embroidery I am just not that thrilled about having to buy another kind of floss! haha
Oh yay! I can't wait to try crewel. I just picked up a great vintage kit from the thrift store-it is Grover from Sesame Street lounging in some flowers, my husband says it has to hang in the craft room instead of the living room though. :( Oh wow, holy run on sentence.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteI love the colors you used :) Recently I was in Books-a-million and found a book called "New Crewel : The Motif Collection: More Exquisite Designs in Modern Embroidery" It would be a really good resource for you if you want to do more crewel designs.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I need to get around to trying crewel. But I am working on embroidering towels. I got the pattern (free yay) from the same women who created the alphabet pattern Meredith did.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it, you are so talented Elyci!! and I really want to try that ABC embroidery piece too!!
ReplyDeleteI love crewel, and this piece is so darling!

I found a vintage crewel embroidery book at my library's book sale a few weeks ago. I am not so good at regular embroidery, though, so I'm a little hesitant to try it.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love the colours you used :)

I love it! The colors are perfect. I've been teaching myself to embroider but I'm not too good yet. I hope you post more!!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing. I love vintage crewel. I am always hoping to stumble across a vintage unused kit to give it a try. Great idea drawing up the pattern yourself, now I may have to try it your way.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, this is amazing, I would be thrilled to get something like that as a gift!

Awesome. Love it! I want to start embroidering again! I haven't done it since grade 7, haha. So I will have to re-learn everything.
ReplyDeletewow this is so gorgeous! beautiful colors too.
ReplyDeleteamazingggg. good job!
ReplyDeleteI just did a name sampler from the one Meredith posted! I didn't do it in crewel as I didn't have any wool wool, but just used embroidery thread - it turned out great! And the instructions for all the different stitches were so great to follow :)
ReplyDeleteOh man I've SO been wanting to embroider! I keep putting it off and telling myself that once the cold weather hits it is a MUST! This is so cute!
ReplyDeleteNicely done lady!

Oh wow! That is gorgeous! Crewel looks way intimidating to me. It's so beautiful! I love the colors in yours :)
ReplyDeleteI have just recently started learning new stitches other than the back stitch. Right now I am trying my handle at Doodle stitching. I have decided to cover the hallway with lyrics from our favorite songs and since I sew and he paints, we are doing it all ourselves. Right now he is working on Beth by Kiss and I am stitching one up of The Rainbow Connection by Kermit. Btw.... your flowers are gorgeous and I might steal them for my Beth Jeans Houghton piece. :)
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! The sweetest gift!! xo Heather
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. I need to do some research into the world of embroidery, I was lucky enough to be given pretty much the contents of a sewing room and there are a few pieces of fabric in there with some designs drawn up already and the sewing has been started where after the stitches have been done the edge of the fabric has been cut away up to the edge of the stitches. I don't know what stitch is used or if this is some fancy type of embroidery with a special name but I'm dying to finish it off.
ReplyDeleteVery cute!!!! I love the colors!
ReplyDeleteWow...you did an amazing job! Looks perfect!
ReplyDeletewoah, woah, woah!! This is a-freakin-mazing elycia! Here I thought you were all about the fast ADHD projects, but this just proves you have what it takes - I'm impressed! lol
ReplyDeleteSuch a great colour combo and design! Lucky Kaylah.
