photos :: Bird Nest

On Friday Andrea and her kids popped over for a few minutes and her son spotted a bird's nest in our grapevine! I was pretty shocked that I hadn't noticed it but then I remembered that I am extremely oblivious. We checked it out and it was empty so I really started to wonder how long it had been there!
Two nights ago I went out to snap a few photos of the cute nest and I held my camera up so that I could get a photo of the inside of the nest. When I looked at it on the camera I was pretty excited to see two blue eggs!
I'm pretty positive they are robin's eggs and I read online (so I'm sure it's true) that robins will lay one egg per day and not start incubating them until they have four so that they will all hatch at the same time. Sure enough, we checked out the nest today and there are three eggs! I really want to see the babies when they hatch.

And don't worry, I haven't been touching it.

  2. omigosh omigosh.... not sure if you've seen my posts the last week... but 'crazy for robin's nests' lady here! Had to make them in necklaces and brooches! Our neighbour has a nest with 4 babies in them..amazing to watch their blind lil' heads and big beaks gaping open for food - prepare to be heart stopped!

  4. What a perfect little nest! Robin's must have better skills than the sparrow dummies making nests at my house - they're a mess, and keep falling down in clumps.
I recently read that the whole "no touching or the mother won't take care of the nest" thing is not true. If one of the babies falls out while they're still really little, the best thing to do is to carefully place them back up there (if they don't seem injured).
It's so fun to have something like this to keep an eye on in your backyard :) I love how grouchy little baby birds look.

  5. Cool photos! It's pretty late in the breeding season, especially for robins, so I'm betting it's a second nesting attempt. Enjoy watching the babies grow up :)

  13. What a fun surprise!! I expect you to be in full-on birdwatcher mode until they hatch, because, you know, now you have to document the whole thing for all of us. ;)

  14. We had this (robin's nest) experience last year. It was amazing and heartbreaking all at the same time... two of them made it to the fly-away stage, but one egg didn't hatch at all, and one baby was pushed out of the nest (we found it on the concrete below). I cried so hard, I don't know if I could go through that again...
    Good luck to you!

  15. I love birds nests! That is really special you have a nest with eggs in it! Every time we move to a new place there is always a birds nest near by with baby birdies in it. I love nature :)

  16. eeeeep!! How sweet! I can't wait to see them hatched!! We have several neighborhood cats that like to hang out in our backyard and I fear for any bird that thinks our backyard a sanctuary!! :/

  17. My mom always dreamed of a robin's egg blue kitchen so when she left her ex-husband and moved into her new house with my brother and sister, she painted her kitchen that color. She loved it. Then my brother painted over it. Now my parents are moving back and I'm insisting that we re-paint it robin's egg blue and making her curtains with tea pots and cups on them because she deserves a lovely kitchen. Thanks for sharing and caring for your bird neighbors. :)

  21. Aw how lovely. I too recently found a nest in my garden (Ok as I type this I wonder why I'm telling you this because I know you are super sensitive about animals like me, so sorry in advance!) I was so excited to find it and I enjoyed seeing the mummy bird sitting in there. I couldn't see the eggs tho cos it was up so high. But one morning after some really bad storms in the night I came out to find the nest half blown out of the tree, I cried! No sign of the eggs or mummy bird, but I'm pretty sure she figured out how to scoop them up in her wings and fly them somewhere new! (I like to stay childishly naive about such things) Please keep us updated with the nest pics! x

  25. Oh those two little eggs are so adorable!!! I love little bird's nests. We have black capped chickadees nesting in a birdhouse outside my window. I can hear the little babies chirping when their parents fly in to feed them. So cute! XD

  26. This is just too wonderful! I just noticed a bird's nest on my porch yesterday. It's such a neat think to watch birds make their homes. :)

  27. So cool. I knew already that birds can only lay one egg a day, but I didn't know that they waited until they had four eggs! And the color is super pretty.

  30. that's not cool.

even if you don't touch the birds nest, the parents can still reject the babies if you go anywhere near them.

if you are such an animal lover, then leave them the hell alone rather than thinking it will make a cool blog post.

  32. whoa chill out, birdlover! elycia stated she is aware of that MYTH. most birds have a terrible sense of smell and won't detect a human was there. elycia is simply taking pictures and i highly doubt she will truly disturb the nest.

elycia- i love watching baby birds! my next door neighbor had a robin nest in the little tree in his front yard. it was so fun to see them go from eggs to babies. and then one day they flew away!

  33. How cute!

I remember we had love doves living in my courtyard and we snapped pictures of their entire development from being sat on in the nest as eggs to hatching to being baby birds trying to fly. We never had an issue with human smell because we never touched. Only took pictures. It was fine and such a fun project. I turned the whole thing into a little bird book for my cousins and they loved it.
