cats :: walking on a leash

I think I have mentioned before that both of our kitties will put on a harness and leash and go for a little walk. Anakin likes going outside but it takes him a while to get used to his new surroundings and he is nervous the first couple times in a new place. He did venture around the backyard a bit but then started doing his "I want to go inside right meow" meow.
Farva on the other hand gets really excited when you pull out his harness and leash and runs to the door. He doesn't mind wearing them at all and is always eager to go outside and explore. I think the difference is that we started taking Farva outside on a leash when he was a really little kitten. (He was so tiny we had to wrap the harness around him twice!) Since we didn't get Anakin until he was four months old we weren't able to do that with him. Anakin will tolerate wearing his harness but he doesn't love it the way our silly little Farva does.
Farva was brave enough to venture into the front yard. He even walked down the sidewalk a bit. Our street is really quiet so he wasn't getting scared by noisy cars like he has in the past. I think that with a bit of practice we could take Farva for walks around the neighbourhood! How adorable and hilarious would that be?

Will your cats wear a harness and leash? Do you take them outside once in a while?

EDIT: I forgot to mention I have a silly little video up on Meredith's blog! Pop on over to check it out :)

  1. Oh my gosh, my kitten does the same thing! He's a total baby and is an inside cat, but it's always fun getting out his harness and leash and taking him for walks in our backyard. He always gets so low in the grass and waddles around through it, it's so funny!
Cats are the greatest, aren't they?

  2. When we first moved into our new house we had to put harnesses on Ike ad Oscar to get them used to the garden before they were allowed out on their own.. And they hated it! Oscar would only walk backwards and in robot movements because he didnt like the feeling and Ike successfully munched through his! In the end they both managed to wiggle out of their harnesses and roam free. We panicked so much that it was too early and they might run away but they are so clever and returned home to their fluffy beds!! :) love your little cats, they are so beautiful!

  3. Oh my gosh this is so cute! I want to take Cupcake (she just turned 3 in October) out but my mom says she might get free and runaway. She is scared easily and there are always cars outside on the road before our yard. I took her out of the front porch a few times to touch the snow, lol. I think she liked it :)

  4. Uwah! So cute! Farva is so brave ^^
Our Pussy-cats are all free roaming, I think if I tried a leash on any they'd never speak to me again... Ever.
We have one for the bunny though, he loves it!

  6. I can't believe your cats will do put up with leashes - mine would rather die! :) Funny that you posted this today, b/c this weekend I posted some photos from Life magazine in 1961 - Hollywood cat audition lines! Hilarious & kinda weird.

    Thanks for sharing these :)

  7. How come you don't let them go outside naturally? My kitty Hewiee goes outside when he wants to then we keep him in the evening. The kitty leads are cute though!

  8. fluffyghost, jessi: I personally don't believe in letting your cats run free but I respect other people's choice to let their cats do so. In general cats live much longer safer lives if they are kept indoors. I don't know about where you guys live but in Hamilton it is actually illegal to allow your cat to "be at large". Silly law words but it means that technically you are not allowed to let your cats roam free. Of course some people still do but I would never, ever let my little fur balls out unattentended. :)

  9. That's awesome! I've never known a cat to be put on a leash and be okay with it. My little kitten would never. She's too crazy and off the walls to be restrained. Haha!

  10. Oh gosh this is so cute! And I would love to do this too if I ever going to own a cat. It's a great solution to get your cat (in a safe way) outside. I would be terrified to let my cat outdours all alone.

  11. My cat will never ever wear a leash. I don't think any should...
Mine goes out in the evening, spends his all night outdoors and comes back to the flat in the morning...to sleep! :)

  12. My 3 cats are indoor and won't wear collars/leashes/clothes. They have alot of windows to look outside but I live by the street so they never go outside. That's cool that yours will though!

  14. kay, so what i got from your video was
    a) skip class, go shopping
    b) sleep through lectures
    c) don't do assignments

...right? ;) haha...just kidding! but seriously, those are all good tips! i've had to miss a bunch of little 2% assignments this year because really, like you said...they take more time than they are worth and there's other things i could/should be doing!

ps: i can tell you just dyed your hair in that video...your fingers are all pink :) hehe

  19. I have a leash and harness for my cat, Kong. But last time I took him outside he got scared and almost wiggled free. I got so nervous since I live on a busy street. I decided I will have to take him to a park and walk him instead.

    Your kitties are adorable Elycia!

  21. I tried the leash thing on my cats but there are just way to many dogs in my neighborhood. Poor things would try to run away! So I decided not to pursue the walking my cat thing. Plus, they are indoor cats so they are just fine not going out. But your cats are so adorable!

  22. Every cat I've had goes outside on their own with no harness. (Indoor/Outdoor cats) but our newest addition was adopted and came from an apartment, so has never been outside. We don't let her out, she's too timid.

  23. Oh my gosh, this is so cute! I wish we would have done this when our kitties were babies. Our are indoor too, I would be WAY too worried about them running free!

  24. Your cats are adorable! I love the little kitty leashes. You should walk them around the neighborhood, that would be the best! :D

  25. Eeek! I am in love with them... they're adorable! I tried taking my Luna out on a leash once and she was terrified. Now I let her out on her own and she stays on the deck for a bit until a bird or bug scares her inside. She's a scaredy cat.

  28. My kitties used to go out into the yard every day, on their harnesses/leashes! They weren't allowed outside alone! They loved it, Sui would run if she heard her leash picked up, ready to go haha, and would basically jump into it she was so excited. Now we moved to an apartment with a nice big balcony, which is a little safer with no chance of running away so they get to enjoy the outside world leash free (while we sit out with them - never just them alone!) for the first time, and they are loving it! I think all kitties need outside time! especially to eat a little grass to keep them nice and healthy :)

  29. Wow, I'm a little surprised by some of the comments to this post. I say, yay for leashes! No matter where you live, everyone runs the risk of having their cats go outside to wonder around and have something bad happen. Whether you live in the city, suburbs, or out in the country, our kitties can be stolen, eaten, lost, or killed. My 2 sweet cats are inside only, and that's the way it will stay. Call me over-protective but I can't run the risk of anything happening to my sweet baby Oliver. I love him too much. So, for me, I am a pro-leash cat lady! When they're safe, happy, & healthy, everything is right in my world. :)
My cat actually has a harness on right now :)

  30. This is adorable! You can tell Farva is really enjoying himself:)
I would love to put all five of my cats on leashes and walk them down the street in a big pack next to my pittie but I live in the city and they would be terrified...and I can't even imagine getting a harness around/keeping it on any of them. Plus I don't want them to get the ~urge to go outside (in two cases BACK outside since they were strays). When I was younger I had a kitten I hand raised and walked her around my neighborhood on a leash with my parents' dog every afternoon but she wound up getting to like the outdoors too much and my mom accidentally let her out one day and she disappeared :(

  31. Someday when I live in a quiet neighbourhood I will try this. I doubt my cats will like it though... I bet the key is introducing it to them early (like you did with Farva)
    THEY LOOK SO CUUUUTE THOUGH!

  32. My parents just started taking their kitty up to the cottage so she doesn't have to spend weekends alone when they are away. At home she is an indoor/outdoor cat, but my mom is scared that something will eat her at the cottage, so she has to wear a leash to go outside. She is not a fan, but I think she likes that she can at least go outside a little bit. Funny. Your cats are sooo cute! :)

  33. My cats are all outside cats but I have always wanted to put them on a leash anyway haha! :)

  36. We found one of our cats outside a Walmart in the winter, and for years Gollum was always trying to get outside. I finally thought to use a bunny harness we had to bring him out side, but any time I put it on it him just flops around on the ground o.O Silly Golly.

For some reason one of our other cats, Senator, has been really wanting to go outside all the time lately. He's a bit fiestier than Golly, so putting a harness on him isn't a possibility, but when Sennys in a good mood I'll carry him outside so he can sniff the air for a bit.

  37. Adorable ! Our cat doesnt like a harness , but my daughters ferrets love theirs...we take them and the dog for walks down to the beach where the ferrets have a dig in the sand ...very very cute ...although slow from all the people stopping to comment lol

  38. Awww! I can only dream of doing this! Although it's not needed as I live in South Africa, in a safe neighbourhood where all the cats run around outside.
Lucky for me, our 3 cats are quite the couch potatoes. :)
My one attempt at taking Mushu (the real life Kung Fu Panda) for a walk on a leash failed. He just lay down and went right to sleep. :)
But when I go for a walk, he follows me like a dog - until the end of the street, where he collapses as if he's run a marathon. :D Ahh kitties make me happy!
