cats :: adjusting

I am so happy to have these little guys home with us. We brought them over on Sunday night and I was a little nervous about how they would adjust. Farva was more adventurous and explored everything the first night. Anakin hid under different things in the bedroom. He would come out from under the bed and then go under the dresser, then he would come out from the dresser and go under the other dresser. Poor guy! By the next day Anakin was feeling a little more brave and explored the house. Both of the kitties like hanging out in the living room and I was able to snap a few cute shots of them. I love my guys!

I think they will love their new home soon enough. Do you have any stories about your pets adjusting to your new home?

  1. Aw they look like they're settling in well :D

Mine hated moving house and hid under a duvet for two days. I think next time I'll be putting them in a cattery for a few days whilst all the moving is being done as lots of people and stuff moving around was a bit overwhelming.

  2. The adjustment stage is a bear! When my other half and I moved into our new house a couple months ago my three felines were scared to death. They hid in their cat tree almost all night and finally started to explore the following day but jumped at every bleep of sound. They are great now...they rule the house of course. Glad your little babies look so comfy already!

  3. Beautiful animals. I have always had dogs and never a cat. Maybe I should get one. They're such sweet pets. xo, rv

  5. First off, I love that little speckled nose.

Secondly, we moved mine a couple months ago now, and my younger little guy wouldn't come out from under the futon for about four days. I was literally having to put his food under there. He would shake like a [fat] little leaf if I tried to extract him...

  6. Aw, your kitties are so cute :)
When I was five, I moved about an hour away from my first house. My parents left me with the job of keeping the cat occupied. I think I fed him the whole bag of cat treats... yum ;)
I am STILL in love with your living room! eep! It's so epic :)

  7. I've never had any cats, but when we brought my puppy home for the first time this summer, she spent three days licking the floors in all the rooms -- carpet, tile, rugs, wood -- didn't matter what it was. Maybe that was her way of marking her territory? Better than pissing everywhere, I guess.

  8. My cats were kind of like yours. One of my cats seriously depends on the other to make sure things are okay for her....haha. She basically did the same thing as Anakin, while my other cat explored. Cats are all different :)

  9. When we moved, the cats were hiding in the attic for 3 days..after that they came downstairs very carefully, with that typical walk they can have when they think it could be dangerous, you know, really close to the ground with their ears flat :-)
Your cats look pretty relaxed! And wow, they look great at those photos with that beautiful blue background :-)

  11. Aw, they're so cute. I'm glad they're doing well in the new home! My sister cats didn't seen to be bothered when they were moving, but one of them was a little scared and hid, too. :)

  12. I have 3 cats and we moved from a tiny 1 bedroom apt with like 1 window to a small 2 bedroom house with a huge den in the back and all the walls are windows, and it overlooks a big fenced in yard with squirrels and stuff. Well that den(aka the biggest room in the house) belongs to them now and they love sitting in the window seals and we gave them our old furniture and set it up like a giant fort for them. So yeah, they adjusted and are super happy here :)

  13. Oh goodness they are so cute...i love little cat paws. When I moved in with my boyfriend and his dog...my cat had an issue with leaving from under the bed and hissed and scratched at the dog...over a year now and they are still aren't on speaking terms but it is definitely better! I just want them to cuddle, is that so wrong?! Thanks for sharing! -Lo

  14. The sofa seems to be the perfect perch for them to look out the window!

Our cat hid under the bed for 2 days..he was not a hamper camper in his new digs..but he eventually had to venture out. The top of the sofa was his favorite spot as well!

  15. They are so cute! Love the sofa pic...so cozy!

We just recenlty moved from the US back to Germany and brought our pup and our kitty with us! Kitty was in the passenger room with us on the plane...in her kennel...we gave her valium to make it through the flight...it worked pretty good...and once we finally made it to our home...she ran around meowing the first few hours, slept real close to me at night, but on the second day she started exploring and looking for some cozy spots...after about 3 days she was at home!

  17. i have many friends who have the greatest cat or kittens. such fun to go over & visit. they have so many toys. shoe strings, paper towel rolls, the bag that hold a tea bag all rolled up & thrown & many others. but it is such fun to see their fits ... how one minute they are sitting perfectly still & the next they are running around through the house like a crazy cat. so funny. hiding under chairs, tables, sheets. to cute!! they all have totally different personalities.(:

  18. my cats were they same way... they completely freaked out when we first moved to the apartment we're in now. i think it took them about a week to adjust. they're happy now!

they even pile onto our bed all together, sometimes. there's a great big, HUGE apartment for them to stretch out in... yet they insist on all being on our bed.

  19. I have a chihuahua and he was abused before I adopted him so he has some "issues"... when we moved into our new house he was terrified of boxes. When I was packing our apartment he would go hide and cry (like a weird yelp, like he was hurting or something)... he threw up all the time and licked and licked and licked... it was so sad! But I had no choice, I had to pack. He's adjusted to our new house now, but whenever we get boxes out (Christmas stuff, box of diapers, etc) he gets super duper nervous. I don't know what the deal is with boxes but it makes him crazy.

  20. When I moved into my current apartment my dog Monty would sit and watch me pack with the saddest little look in his eyes like I was going to leave him, it was so heartbreaking! On moving day when we reached our new pad I couldn't find him and freaked out that he must have gotten out and didn't know our new neighborhood, only to find him curled up in one of the empty moving boxes... poor little thing. (He loves our new home now thank goodness:)

  21. When I moved a few months ago, my (female, independent) cat was a little nervous, but way more interested in finding potential sunning spots. My (male, neurotic) cat spent the first week in the bedroom, dish-sized eyes, and refused to leave. Then he spent a few months not using the litter box, shall we say, even though he really seemed to like the new place more (better windows and a porch, what's a cat to complain about?).

He's better now, but I'm worried next time we move, he's going to need sedatives to keep him from hyperventilating. There's a lot to be said for well-adjusted cats. Good luck!

  22. oh man, I need to get a cat. I'm too lonely!!! But everyone tells me that I have great potential of becoming a very intense cat lady. I don't know if I'm ready for that...

    Love your blog, ladyfriend!

  24. Your cats are so adorable! Me and my two cats just went through TWO moves within five weeks. They've been through so many moves now that they have a super easy time adjusting. They used to hide and get super scared, releasing that awful smell that cats give off sometimes. This time, they both hid under the bed for a couple hours and by dinner time they were out roaming around, eating and using their litter box normally!

  25. My cats hid when we moved to our new place, and for about a month after my big guy slept on my pillow right above my head at night!

  28. i love pink nosed kitties! how lucky you are to have two!
when we moved into our house we brought a little ferel kitty that we had only had for a week. she hid for over a month and even got down in the basement (that was an adventure getting her out). six months later she let me pet her for the first time. and now, almost two years later, she loves me and is the cuddliest little baby. i'm so happy, i worried that we traumatized her with the move.

  29. Jeremy and I are moving in the next few months. We'll be getting our cat Linus a baby sister (kitten) around the same time, so we're extremely nervous about how he'll adjust to all the changes. He can be so temperamental at times.

  30. We once inherited a cat that the old owner couldn't take her to their new apartment. She would always hide in the closets and if you found her, she would BOLT to a new hiding place. She was so fast! I used to tell people "We have a cat, and I'm pretty sure she's orange."

We just moved into our new house, and while we don't have any pets (unless you count the two kids...) I'm the one who had trouble adjusting! Especially at night when I had to get up to feed the baby. I walked into so many doors and walls... There was even one night that I could not for the life of me find the way out of our bedroom.

  31. Our cats are pretty used to moving, our 9 year old has lived in 8 different places! Since the 3 of them moved to our house that is about 1200 more square feet they pretty much loved it immediately and havent stopped tearing around the place and up and down the stairs since we moved in. I can't get over how cute anakin's freckle nose is and of course I could look at silly farva all day<3

  32. Poor kitties! They're so brave!
It's not easy for pets to move to a different place. I kind of hope my cats will handle it well when it happens (one is very very shy!)

  33. Your cats are so cute! When I got my cat Luigi last spring he was just about 8 weeks old and very adventurous indeed. When I got him out of the transport box he was soaking wet because he had climbed into the little water bowl inside the box to get a better view of the car, the road and finally the house. I opened the box and he came shooting out of the box and straight under the couch where he hid and waited until I didn't watch him anymore. Then he'd wander off and explore the house. It took him only a few hours to adjust to my home, which was good.
Hope your kitties are adjusting to their new home quickly! I guess it will be a bit easier for them because they already know you. Keep us updated on their progress!
(P.S.: I love that living room! Such pretty colours!)

  34. Our landlord did some remodeling on our apartment when he moved out of the house, which included giving us an extra bedroom (it had been part of his apartment). So a door in our apartment turned from a closet to a bedroom one day. Our cat wouldn't go near it for about a week. She was completely terrified! We had to coax her into it with treats. It must have seemed like magic to her.

  36. Your cats are beautiful! We just got a second cat on Sunday, so right now life is all about the two of them adjusting to each other. It's been... interesting...

  37. Aww, they are such beautiful cats! I am debating on whether or not I should get one for my apartment. The thing is that I'm so busy, that I don't think it would be fair for the cat to be alone so much. But I do want one! Maybe someday.

  38. When we moved to Welland, Logan peed himself in his carrier. He cried the whole way and it was just an hour drive. Once we let them out and cleaned Logan up they both took off. Seymore sniffed and explored, Logan hid. It took them a good week to seem comfortable.

I feel bad that kitties get freaked out but they adjust quickly!

  40. Aww they are lovely! We have 5 cats and on moving day we decided to move them into a room at the new place before the movers arrived..Biggest mistake-NEVER move 5 cats at once-you will finish the 20 minute journey a lot less saner than you started out! Each of them were in their own cat carrier-and to say they howled is an understatement......

  41. Aw they are gorgeous, I am pretty sure they'll get adjusted in no time because your house is simply beautiful!
